According to the movies, they do. The movies are not accurate.

The biggest problem is that a silencer only works for a limited amount of time. It's effectiveness is limited by the basic structure, which... Well... Is shit, at least figuratively.
EDIT: In sniper rifles, they do work quite well, but they are complete crap in any rapid firing gun, because of the intensity of the escaping gas.
says ZonkeyBalls on Oct 4th 17 (#2667422)
If you want silence, just buy some sub-sonic rounds. Got some for my 22 and it sounds like dry firing it. The range isn't worth crap but for close up, it can do some damage.

Silencer is a wrong term, it's a suppressor, it can't make a gun silent but it reduces sound a lot. If you shoot a pistol without it people will hear the gunshot at lest 300-400m away, with a suppressor your shots will be limited to the room or building you're in. Smaller rounds, less gas combustion means smaller bang.

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle Mocks Hunters For Wanting To Protect Ears With Suppressors
Once again, the outright ignorance of there people, who don’t even understand that a suppressor doesn’t silence the sound. The shooter didn’t and couldn’t have used a suppressor, but yes, somehow stopping them from being available is ‘policy that would do something?’

Maybe Hillary thinks people are dying from the sound.
Poor thing. Bill, face her chair to the window, would you please?
says Budwick on Oct 4th 17 (#2667522)
No. They are more correctly called "sound suppressors".
